Trunk stability training - tips & exercises
One muscle group that can easily be forgotten when preparing for a week on the slopes is the core. The core muscles are an important part of skiing and if you have a weak core, there is a risk of back pain.
If you experience back pain, you may not be able to ski at all. That being said, it is extremely important that you have the stability and strength in your core to prevent back pain.
Lack of stability can lead to misloading
The trunk muscles are the backbone of the whole body. If you have a problem with your core, it will lead to severe back pain, which in turn can leave you bedridden during your skiing holiday. And who wants that?
When skiing, it is important that you do not put too much strain on your torso and back. When you bend your legs, it's important not to take any shortcuts that will cause your back to suffer. If you have not built up core stability, there is a greater risk of incorrect loading.
How can you train your trunk stability?
There are many different ways to train your core stability. By doing exercises such as the plank, rocking plank and side plank, you build up the muscles around your torso which results in you becoming more stable. It will also lead to you "being able" to load your back in the right way.
Many exercises include the trunk even though the focus is not on that particular part of the body. When you run, you will build up a basic stability in the whole body which the torso will benefit from.
If you feel like you don't want to run, a faster walk can give your core a push in the right direction. There are hundreds of different exercises that involve the core muscles - find out what works best for you!
Another tip is to be careful the first day on the slopes. It's better to feel what your body can handle and then increase accordingly. If you go too hard on the first day, you may end up with a collapsed torso and back problems, which will lead to you having to leave the slopes.
