How to become a better cross-country skier?
Cross-country skiing is a demanding sport, both physically and technically. However, it's a sport where you can progress quickly if you put your mind to it. So, how do you actually become a better cross-country skier?

Build up a good level of fitness
To be able to develop and cope with this process, it is important that you have a basic level of fitness. You can build up your fitness in hundreds of different ways - running, strength training and rowing are some examples of good fitness exercises. You can find more exercises in our previous article on cardio training.
If you feel that running is too tough, you can start with Nordic walking, which also gives you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with poles used in cross-country skiing. Something that is very effective is roller skiing. This can also be done during the summer months and you can practise a technique that can be used on the ski slopes. You can read more about this in our article "Training on roller skis - a fun way to exercise".

Build up a muscle mass
To become a better skier, you also need to build up muscle mass. Important muscle groups are shoulders, arms and legs. Strengthening exercises can be done both at home and if you have access to a gym.
If you're not experienced, it's important not to go out too hard but to start at a level that suits you and your body best. From there you can develop the exercises and pace. Your body needs to get used to it!

Find the right equipment
Make sure you invest in the right equipment and get help from people who know. There is a lot to consider when choosing the right skis and poles. If you have the wrong equipment, you won't be able to get the most out of your skiing.
Find the right technology
It is also important to find the right technique. Everything from how you hold your poles to how you use your legs is crucial. The poles should be held loosely and your legs should not be stiff. At first, it can be difficult to find the right technique, but once you find it, you will notice positive results.
These were some tips on how to develop your cross-country skiing and become a better skier. It takes many hours of practice to see results. We hope you use these and are well prepared for long days on the trails with us at Stöten in Sälen!
