Train for the Vasaloppet without snow
Are you planning to win the whole Vasaloppen 2020? Then it's high time to start training! Get a head start and start now that the bare ground season has started. To give you the best chance of success, we want to share our top tips on how to train for the Vasaloppet, without snow!
Stronger, faster and technically more skilful - without snow
White gold is an expensive luxury. It is well worth waiting for and it is worth savouring. But if the goal is to go home from Vasaloppet as a gold medallist, you need to start training long before the snow falls to the ground, several months in fact. Increase your chances of winning by getting started with training right away. A winner trains in all the areas that can make you better - strength, speed and technique.
- Stronger As a skier, you need to have endurance in all muscle groups of the body, both in terms of fitness and strength. To improve your endurance, you can therefore focus on extending your fitness training over a longer period of time, rather than a specific distance. When it comes to fitness and strength training, it is also ideal if you have access to roller skis. This way, you can train all the muscles you use when skiing, while also improving your technique and fitness!
- Faster - Obviously, you need to be able to complete the race in the best possible time in order to win. Interval training is a suitable form of training that allows you to give a little more, while at the same time improving your oxygen uptake and thus increasing your endurance. To be as fast as possible, it is also important to understand which technique gives the best results.
- Technically more skilful - Use the barefoot to learn exactly how to use the poles to push a little extra. On roller skates, you'll learn how to use your arms, legs and feet to push off in the absolute best way. You can also use a pair of poles when you're out on your run! Just remember to keep your chin down to avoid straining your back and shoulders.
We have previously written about other training tips for Vasaloppet and it's clear that the type or method of exercise that's right for you is very personal. All exercise is good exercise, as long as it makes you feel good. We also want to take this opportunity to emphasise the importance of recovery. Giving your body the opportunity to rest is at least as important as hard workouts.
Remember to have fun!
Finally - and perhaps most importantly - remember to have fun! Which exercise is best suited to you and your goals can be difficult to decide before you get started. It is therefore very important that you remember to enjoy and have fun on the journey towards your goal. Start from your own conditions and gradually increase the pace, the load and your demands on yourself.
A good way to keep enjoying your workout is to listen to a fun podcast or exciting documentary, challenge a friend, do whatever you feel like doing, or do a combined workout. For example, you could start with 30 minutes of running, then do a strength session at the gym and finish your workout by honing your technique!
We hope you've got a little extra motivation and that it's you who will be the winner next year. If you are looking for accommodation during Vasaloppet, you can check out our large selection!
