Skiing is one of the best things in the world - but why not combine it with other winter activities during your holiday? Try your luck at ice fishing in Sälen and you might just be the one providing the evening's feast!

Ice fishing is an activity that is suitable for everyone (with a little patience) regardless of previous experience and age. Whether you plan to go on your own or bring your family or friends, it's a great way to spend some quality time. Pack a packed lunch and a coffee thermos and spend a few relaxing hours out on the ice. In addition to Sälen's best skiing, Stöten offers the perfect setting for ice fishing. Sälen is home to plenty of beautiful lakes and ponds that are home to amazing wildlife. Trout, rainbow trout, char, pike and perch are just some of the fish species that thrive in our waters. Most of the ice fishing spots can also be reached by car, which makes it incredibly accessible for you as a visitor.

The right fishing gear

Depending on the type of fish you’re trying to catch, you may need different types of equipment and fishing methods. If you want to catch a brown trout, char or rainbow trout for dinner, for example, you should use a traditional ice-fishing rod and bait such as maggots or prawns. The same applies if you’re trying to catch perch, with the only difference being that you should use a float rig and roach on the hook. Another tip is to head out extra early in the morning for the best chance of catching perch. If, on the other hand, you’re keen to land a pike, you’d be well advised to try angling with a pike rig or roach on the hook. Here too, it’s best to head out early in the morning to get the pike to bite.
