APRIL APRIL! First in Sweden - Stöten offers ski lessons in ski ballet

1 April 2026

This year, Stöten in Sälen celebrates 50 years as a ski centre. As a tribute to the 70s, when it all started, a new major investment is now being made in Stöten's ski school. Ski lessons in the classic freestyle discipline of ski ballet are now on offer.
- Ski ballet is part of the freestyle heritage and at the same time something that few have tried today. It simply felt like the right time to give it a modern comeback," says Tomas Berg, destination manager at Stöten in Sälen.

The Stöten ski resort in Sälen is celebrating 50 years of skiing by paying tribute to history. The great skiing trend of the 70s, ski ballet, is about to make a comeback. From next winter, Stöten guests will have the opportunity to spin, jump and dance their way down the slopes under the guidance of specially trained instructors.

- We have noticed a lack of artistic skiing in Swedish ski resorts and are convinced that this will be the next big ski trend, says Tomas Berg, destination manager at Stöten in Sälen.

Skiing with choreography
Ski ballet, also known as acroski, can be described as figure skating on skis and involves combining skiing with choreographed movements, pirouettes and spins on a slightly inclined slope. Although the sport never reached full Olympic status, ski ballet gained a lot of attention in the 70s, 80s and 90s and was a popular freestyle discipline at the World Cup.

During a lesson, participants will learn basic ski ballet moves, do balance exercises and try out simple tricks - all to music. The lessons will be held in a designated area adjacent to the ski school area at Soltorget where music will be played throughout the lesson.

Equipment included
In order to provide participants with a holistic experience and a more authentic feel of what ski ballet was like in its heyday, equipment will also be included in the course fee. Each participant can pick up a pair of long, straight skis and a pair of poles, which serve more as a prop rather than a functional tool, from the Stöten Ski Shop before the lesson begins.

- "It's important that we honour the origins of ski ballet and give the riders as authentic an experience as possible. We also encourage participants to dress in colourful clothes to really get the right feeling," says Tomas Berg, Destination Manager at Stöten in Sälen.

High demand
The instructors, who have already begun to study ski ballet techniques in theory, will attend an intensive practical training course at the end of November this year to be able to teach both beginners and more experienced skiers the spectacular discipline.

- "We are proud to be the first in Sweden to offer ski ballet lessons. The interest in the market is great and the demand for ski ballet lessons has long been high among our guests, so we expect a great impact, says Mr Eriksson, sports manager at Stöten in Sälen.

The initiative is part of Stöten's anniversary year, but the lessons are expected to continue for a long period to come. If interest is high, Stöten does not rule out organising ski ballet shows and small competitions in the future.

Booking for Stöten's ski ballet lessons opens today, 1 April, at 12:00.

NOTE! This article is an April Fool's joke and therefore not genuine 🙂
