Take the plane to the mountains

Travelling to Swedish ski resorts is something many Danes choose to do during the winter months. Here you can enjoy great skiing, cosy restaurants and plenty of off-piste activities - and thanks to the new Scandinavian Mountains Airport (SCR), getting to the Swedish mountains is now easier than ever.

Fly to the Swedish mountains in under two hours

In 2019, the newly built Scandinavian Mountains Airport opened, located right next to the incredibly popular Swedish ski resort Sälen. Flights from five different countries and ten destinations make it easier than ever for Danish, British and Dutch skiers to get to the cosy Swedish mountain resort in northern Dalarna. During the winter season, there are direct flights from Denmark, Copenhagen, Aarhus and Aalborg.

The most comfortable way to travel to the Swedish mountains

Save the family from crowding in the back seat, shorten your journey time considerably and avoid long traffic jams - with flights you can get from the airport in under two hours. And besides being an extremely convenient travel option, it's also affordable. Book well in advance to get the best prices and look out for last-minute deals to save money.

Skiing with ski boots on just after the plane's wheels have touched the runway

Tips!

Hire ski equipment on site and avoid the hassle of checking in special luggage. What's more, you can be sure that you always get the latest equipment and that it is properly maintained with lubrication and sharpening before your holiday.

Airport transfers to Sälen ski resorts

Transfer buses are organised from the airport to all ski resorts in Sälen. The journeys are operated by the local company Sälen Bus and there is a bus transfer for every flight arrival and departure, so it couldn't be easier. When you pre-book, you can choose whether you want to go with the shared transfer or if you prefer a private transfer in a smaller vehicle just for you and your party.

Of course, there is also the possibility to pre-book a private taxi or - if you already know you will need a car during your stay in Sälen - to rent a car. Both Hertz and Europacar are represented at Scandinavian Mountains Airport with rental cars to suit your holiday needs.

Whichever travel option you choose, it only takes 15 minutes to drive from the airport to Stöten in Sälen! In other words, you can be on skis and boots just moments after the plane's wheels have touched the runway.

Landing a plane in the middle of a snowy winter landscape

- how does it work? and is it really safe?

With temperatures well below zero and a snow-covered runway, landing a large aeroplane may seem difficult, but in fact it works perfectly. Both the aircraft and ground handling are technically equipped to take off and land in all types of weather conditions.

For example, the entire aircraft is rinsed with warm water before take-off to remove frost and ice that may have formed on the fuselage and wings. In addition, airport staff always make sure to clear the runway before an aircraft lands. You can also be sure that the pilots always check both weather conditions and landing options carefully before taking off.

This is Scandinavian Mountains Airport

  • Previously used by a small local flying club, the airport was inaugurated in December 2019. Before the airport was used for longer routes and larger aircraft, the runway was both widened and lengthened.
  • During the winter months, the airport is served by flights from five different countries and ten destinations, including Copenhagen, Aarhus and Aalborg.
  • The 500 square metre terminal has four gates and includes a duty-free shop, a kiosk, a café and a car rental desk.
  • From the airport you can easily get to your own ski resort by shuttle bus that departs with every flight that lands or departs. You can also choose to book a taxi or hire a car as a means of transport.
  • The routes are operated by airlines including BRA-fly, SAS and TUI. The runway is 2500 metres long and 45 metres wide.
