Our top barbecue tips
All food tastes better outdoors - that's just the way it is! And barbecuing on the slopes is part of a skiing holiday. Imagine a snowy mountain landscape with crisp sub-zero temperatures where you can warm your frozen hands in front of the open fire while your food is cooking.
For the winter, we've also built a brand new barbecue area in Vargy's adventure course with two barbecue huts, four fireplaces and lots of seating where you and the whole family can sit. There's something special about cooking your food over the fire - everything tastes just a little bit better. What you choose to grill is up to your imagination, but here are some of our favourites to throw on the grill on a cosy winter day.
Cook your skier's lunch over an open fire
For the winter 22/23 we have built another barbecue area where you can prepare your skier's lunch. The barbecue area is located in Vargy's adventure course and can accommodate several parties at once. There are two barbecue huts with covered seating and four fireplaces. Firewood and lighter fluid are always available at the barbecue areas so that you can easily start the fire when you want. Of course, there are already five other barbecue areas in Stöten's ski area. In addition to the new barbecue area, you will find two in Vargy's adventure course, one on Soltorget, one on Skidtorget and one in the slope Alven between Skid- and Snötorget. All are marked on the piste map in case you are unsure.
Vargy's best barbecue tips!
Sausages with bread
A classic! Whether you choose the vegetarian or meat version, it's a hard-to-beat skier's lunch that is both tasty and filling. If you want a more spicy sausage, you can try chorizo or kabanoss. Of course, you choose the accessories yourself, but we prefer the classic with ketchup, mustard and roasted onions - easy to carry in your backpack and easy to prepare.
hamburger
This is also a real legend on the barbecue! Of course, there are also vegetarian options such as soya-based burgers or halloumi. Serve with bread and anything you like. Keep it simple with just cheese, ketchup and mustard, or jazz it up with avocado, pickled red onions and sun-dried tomatoes, which go perfectly with halloumi. The only limit is your imagination!
Soup
But what? Soup on the grill, you might be thinking? Well, yes! Make sure you prepare the soup in advance and bring a heatproof container, then just put it on the grill until it's hot and ready to be served in bowls. A good old-fashioned goulash is perfect in the winter cold, or why not try a delicious sweet potato soup with red lentils? With a slice of bread, the meal is complete!

Sticky buns
If you've never tried making breadsticks over an open fire before, it's definitely time? It's delicious and easy - and the whole family can join in. If you don't want to get up and knead a dough yourself, you can simply buy a ready-made pizza dough and roll it around a skewer. Keep it over the grill until it's fully cooked and then just enjoy.
Marshmallows
Roasting marshmallows is just soooo good - the perfect dessert for a barbecue lunch on a skiing holiday! Just stick a skewer through a large marshmallow and hold it over the fire and it's ready in a flash. If you want to get fancy, you can also sandwich your toasted marshmallow between two biscuits to make it even better!
Banana with chocolate
Those of us who were around in the 80s and 90s will definitely recognise this yummy dessert. If you haven't tried it, we definitely think you should give it a go. Make an incision along the length of a banana and press a few pieces of chocolate into the cut. Then, wrap the banana in aluminium foil and put it on the grill until the banana is warm and the chocolate has melted. Beware of nostalgia!
In the event of an accident...
If you burn yourself while grilling, rinse the burn under cool water for at least ten minutes. Use the never ice or snow to cool down a burn, it hurts more than it helps. Apply cooling balm or aloe vera to the burn, usually available in well-stocked grocery stores or pharmacies, and can relieve the pain.
